Prior to the invention of the printing press, bookmakers employed scribes to hand copy manuscripts. Obviously, this role became obsolete soon after. However, the demand for printed material led to the emergence of the printing industry, which then went on to employ many people in different roles. Any disruptive technological invention will render some roles obsolete, but at the same time, it will result in the creation of new roles too.
